As a Nurse Practitioner and IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant), I’m here to remind you that breastfeeding is a journey – one that’s unique to every mom and baby. 🤱💕

Whether you’re a first-time mom or have breastfed before, remember that it’s okay to seek support and guidance. You’re doing amazing, and your body is incredible. Here are a few tips to help you feel confident and comfortable on your breastfeeding journey:

1️⃣ Get comfortable – Find a cozy spot and a position that works for both you and your baby.

2️⃣ Proper latch – A good latch prevents discomfort for you and ensures baby is getting enough milk.

3️⃣ Trust your body – Every mom’s milk supply is different, and it’s okay to ask for help when needed.

4️⃣ Self-care – Nourish yourself with plenty of water, healthy food, and rest to support your body’s needs.

Posted @withregram • @occsandiego Many infants have feeding difficulties, either with breast or bottlefeeding. Babies who are chest or breastfeeding may have a hard time latching, which can be painful or uncomfortable for the breastfeeding parent. They also may have a hard time transferring milk from their parent. Infants who are bottle fed may also experience issues, such as dribbling milk out of their mouths or choking or gagging while feeding. One problem that could be contributing to these issues is ankyloglossia, or a tongue-tie. ⁠

However, there are many other issues that could also be contributing to these types of problems, such as: ⁠
1. Tight muscles in the tongue⁠
2. Jaw asymmetry ⁠
3. Torticollis or tight neck muscles, especially if a baby has trouble nursing on one side ⁠
4. A high or asymmetric palate⁠
5. Impaired nerve function for the nerves that help control tongue and mouth motion. These nerves are vulnerable in young infants due to their unique anatomy.⁠
⁠
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a gentle, non-invasive option that can be used to benefit all of these issues! Also, it is performed by physicians who can help assess a tongue-tie to determine if a child might need additional intervention to address these ties. ⁠
⁠
If a child does have a procedure to address their tongue-tie, OMT can also be a great option to help support them afterwards with their healing. This helps to encourage tongue mobility and maximize benefit from the procedure. Ask your doctor about how OMT could help your child with feeding dysfunction! ⁠

The many uses of Moringa!

I’ve never seen it in the form of a soap. But maybe skin care is one of its many benefits.

Usually I’m sharing with moms how Moringa can sometimes be used to help increase milk supply. Research has shown this to be true for postpartum moms. It’s not a magic solution though. There are a lot of other steps to take along with incorporating Moringa. But it can definitely help for some when used properly. Be sure to check with your medical provider before using though. Just like medications, herbal supplements can affect other health conditions so make sure it’s safe for you before taking!

One of the most amazing parts of the trip was getting to listen to this Mayan woman talk about one of their cultural remedies for new moms and their milk supply!!!

Although there’s a lot of science that exists now on how milk supply is established, there are still strong roots in the cultural beliefs of how to help new moms. And probably some truth and some science behind these herbal recommendations. I haven’t looked this one up to confirm yet, but if part of someone’s culture and it won’t cause harm, then you bet we’re going to incorporate it into supporting a mom! ❤️
